Local Success

Sacramento's skate scene has had their fair share of local success stories. People such as John Cardiel, Omar Salazar, Stefan Janowski and Brandon Biebel. Skaters are constantly waiting for their moment to shine, some make it and then some break it. The media is a huge part of the skate scene, because having a video come out and being sponsored by a company is important, because you are finally a walking billboard. Being able to have the access to post videos to sites such as YouTube, HellaClips, Berrics, and many other skate sites is crucial. It is one of the main ways to become noticed in the skate scene. The more videos you have the more likely you are to get noticed by companies, skate shops, teams, etc. It is extremely important to skaters to have all of their footage up and available for as many viewers as possible. This week a Sacramento native had yet another big moment to shine in the skate world. His name is Miles Silvas.Miles is 17 years old and was first sponsored as a young teen. Miles skates with his local crew, FOFA, and also rides for PLA Skate (located in Folsom). He has been in featured in videos such as "The Berrics" (which is Eric Kostons and Steve Berras indoor street skate park that features new videos from new and upcoming skaters to the old pros), Organika, and the most recent video for Lakai. Miles Silvas had his newest video come out on Tuesday, and man oh man is it sick! He was lucky enough to be the front page video of Hella Clips (a popular skateboarding video website) Miles is doing everything right and making his name known!

So check him out and enjoy some awesome skating!

  1. I had no idea of the importance of media to this sport, or even much about the sophistication of skating. Thanks so much for this excellent description of the very important role media plays. Very cool to have a video of a Sacramento native and be able to showcase how this has worked for him -- and to let us see one of the videos. Great job, Jen.

  2. That is so cool, I was always amazed at the risk and determination that skaters need to put into their hobby. Now,I am also aware about the other aspects of skating - getting your name out there especially via media! Random question - you seem very knowledgeable about the skate scene in Sac - do you skateboard yourself?

  3. Hi Jenn,

My nephew is a skater and I know how important it means to him to skate. Anytime we watch the news all sort of sports are mentioned but barely there is any mention of skateboarding. I grew up in San Francisco and I did not see many people skate. When I moved to Sacramento, I realize how important skating is to the teens here in Sacramento. Four miles from where I live the city made a skating area, where pre-teens, teens and adults get together and skate.
